Output of qtox from terminal

Summary:

net-im/qtox was recently upgraded to 1.5.0. I synced and merged around a week ago, and again last night. Qtox fails to load, generating a long list of XCB errors (which will be attached).

Steps to Reproduce:

1. emerge qtox (my USE="gtk X")
2. attempt to run qtox in a terminal and read the output

emerge --info:

net-im/qtox-1.5.0::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="X gtk" ABI_X86="64"

~~~
I have restarted X and (re)modprobed the nvidia module just to be sure. No other program on my system is having trouble connecting to the X instance.
Comment 1 zlg (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-10-28 04:03:18 UTC
To add, qtox works correctly when downgraded to 1.4.0, so there must be a regression or missing dependency between 1.4.0 and 1.5.0.
Comment 2 Chiitoo gentoo-dev 2016-12-15 11:25:09 UTC
Does this still happen at 1.6.0?
(I can't see it, but mine is built from upstream master.)
Comment 3 zlg (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-12-16 07:05:01 UTC
Nope, strangely 1.6.0 works as expected. I saw the update shortly after it hit gentoo.git and it works aok. Perhaps stabilization should be considered for it once it's a month old.
Comment 4 zlg (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-12-30 02:39:50 UTC
It appears 1.6.0 is giving me trouble, too. I noticed the trouble didn't start until I plugged in my Turtle Beach PLa headset. Whatever's causing it to hang on startup is beyond me. I've tried:
* plugging in the headset before launching qtox
* removing any audio-device lines from qtox.ini
* removing anything related to qtox in /tmp, ~/.config/tox/qtox.ini, ~/.cache, and so on to create new .ini files.
qtox.ini never gets recreated because it doesn't get to load the GUI.
One of the error messages was:
[02:36:17.457 UTC] ipc.cpp:81 : Debug: Failed to attach to the global shared memory, giving up
shm is mounted, however:
$ mount | grep shm
shm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime)
I can't trace it down to a specific problem. I've tried with USE="-gtk" as well to rule out GTK vs Qt; same results. `ldd` output looked okay (no missing libs)... it's just a really strange issue that I can't seem to nail down.
mgorny recently updated net-im/toxic's dependencies to match upstream (thanks again btw), so maybe we're missing something there.
Comment 5 Chiitoo gentoo-dev 2017-01-04 10:52:31 UTC
If it's happening with 1.7 as well, I'd probably suggest opening an issue (at https://github.com/qTox/qTox).
There are old issues with similar/identical logs, but the ones at least I find crash in different ways after such messages.
Some thoughts:
When qTox hangs, does it use a lot of CPU?  (Maybe 'oprofile' whould be interesting, if it does.)
Which Qt version does the system use?  (I had some slowdowns with 5.8, but things still worked.)
Comment 6 zlg (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2017-01-18 07:01:12 UTC
I've since tried qtox again, setup my headset, had a voice conversation, exited qtox with its config knowing about my headset, and restarted qtox. It works as expected (falling back to whatever other audio devices are available) and doesn't hang.
It seems like this is either some sort of Heisenbug or it's been fixed. I'm inclined to believe the latter since I've started and used it successfully a handful of times now.
Closing since current qtox (1.11.0) works for me and 1.5.0 is no longer in tree.
