Screenshot of badly rendered font

After upgrading to KDE 5 Plasma and the latest stable Portage tree I am stuck with bad rendering of certain fonts. The bad fonts appear in the KDE Application Menu, Dolphin, the system clock in the system tray and in drop down menues in many (but not all) application.

I have provided a screenshot (attached file or see http://picpaste.com/bad_fonts-Gx3OVOhi.png ) where this can be seen.

Directly after the upgrade to KDE 5 Plasma all fonts were OK. The problem started after I switched workspace theme (Settings -> System settings -> Workspace theme) from Breeze to Oxygen and back to Breeze again. Alternatively the problem started when I changed fonts from the defaul Noto Sans to DejaVue Sans (and back again). Now I am stuck with the badly rendered fonts, no matter what setting I have in Settings -> System settings -> Workspace theme
or
Settings -> System settings -> Font

I have tried to create a new user to see if the problem persist, and it does. So the problem seem to be system wide rather that an individual user setting.

Comment 2 Philip Nystromer 2016-08-18 17:38:07 UTC
This is probably a bug in the way KDE determine the System default settings for my particular screen and monitor.

I have managed to apply a manual setting, which mitigate the problem, under Applikcation Launcher -> Settings -> System settings -> Fonts, as follows

KDE Application Menu -> Settings -> System Settings -> Fonts -> <check the Force Fonts DPI button> and set it to 120

and

KDE Application Menu -> Settings -> System Settings -> Fonts -> Use Anti-aliasing -> <change this from "System settings to" Enabled">

then proceed from there into the Configure... menu and experiment with RGB etc settings.

For me it worked with:
"Exclude range tick box": <Unchecked>
"Subpixel rendering type": <RGB>"
"Hinting style": <Medium>

If I revert to System Default for all settings under
KDE Application Menu -> Settings -> System Settings -> Fonts
I get the badly rendered fonts back.

I think the root cause is that the KDE 5 Plasma suite, together with Xorg, possibly in combination with how the Gentoo e-builds are setup for KDE 5 Plasma, does not recognize the type and specification of the screen and monitor I have and set the Font System Default settings accordingly.

My screen is high resolution 2560x1440 pixel, 14" monitor (Computer is Lenovo X1 Carbon laptop, type 20A7-005KMS)

Thanks for reporting, but this is not a packaging issue. Please report upstream to improve the software.
