When I wanted to upgrade octave it failed compiling and I checked the build.log for errors. I found several points that came to my attention. I upgraded cxsparse to the latest unstable release =sci-libs/cxsparse-3.1.2 which does install a pkgconfig file and the configuration then finds the package. Maybe we should update the dependency on sci-libs/cxsparse for octave, when using the sparse use-flag to depend on a release which installs a pkgconfig file, like cxsparse-3.1.2. I haven't tested whether other releases of cxsparse will install this file.
