Compile goes idle and hangs (no CPU usage) and has to be interrupted, see attached build log. May this be related to the autogen update coming with the resolve of bug 355355? Reproducible: Always

Did you update dev-scheme/guile recently? Did you rebuild sys-devel/autogen afterwards?
I had the exact same problem. Solved by rebuilding sys-devel/autogen.
(In reply to Jim from comment #4) > I had the exact same problem. Solved by rebuilding sys-devel/autogen. This is handled automatically by portage if you do 'emerge @preserved-rebuild'.
Please rebuild autogen, then try compiling gnutls again and reopen this bug if the problem persists.
I hit the same problem with gnutls-3.4.14 after updating to guile-2.0.12-r1. I can verify that rebuilding autogen fixes this. I must have missed an emerge @preserved-rebuild, too.
I can't fully reproduce what has been described. Particularly, @revdep-rebuild is a no-op for me, but emerge --sync ; emerge -uDN gnutls with yet a newer guile exited successfully now.
Some facts about Funtoo devs: - they were able to really fix this bug - 2 years ago - in a user friendly manner (as opposed to googling + manually re-emerging autogen) - in less than 24 hours after the first report https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-1427 https://github.com/funtoo/funtoo-overlay/commit/8cb9f961d7b0a7b573621619dbb4986dce570001
