I solved this by appending -Wno-error to C(XX)FLAGS

It's an extremely brittle flag, as new compiler versions invariably add new diagnostic warnings that this flag will then turn into compilation failures. I could see having -Werror enabled for debug builds (i.e., during development) but not for release builds (i.e., during deployment).
