Following the KDE Plasma 5 upgrade this week VLC no longer selects options from the on-screen video menu. The pointer disappears when it's over the graphical area and as best I can tell doesn't select even if positioned where the button likely is. Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, fixed with version 2.2.3, at least on my system. I'll mark this as resolved for my needs.
I should add that while 2.2.3 did fix the problem it did not effect the qt4 message so there may be something to report upstream. Not sure.
