The renaming of the 'smbclient' USE flag to 'client' between net-fs/samba versions 3.* and 4.* is both confusing and unnecessary. Paludis in particular gets confused by the resulting dependency specs and requires a workround like the one seen in media-video/vlc/vlc-2.2.3.ebuild. I don't see why the USE flag names can't be standardized between the versions, chaging both to either 'client' or 'smbclient'. A few ebuilds will have to be tweaked but it shouldn't be too much work IMO.
