GDB backtrace for =dev-qt/qt-creator-4.0.3

Hi,

=dev-qt/qt-creator-2.8.1 was last working Qt Creator version.

With Qt Creator 3.x and above, it's simply impossible to start up Qt Creator (instant crash when clicking the Qt Creator icon or starting from the command-line).

From the attached backtrace, it seems to relate to JS engine. Is it new that Qt Creator now requires JS to work? In this case, I fear that Qt Creator won't work anytime soon on ia64, as the only working JS implementation on ia64 is Mozilla's Spidermonkey (see [1] for WebKit situation).

If this crash doesn't come from JS engine in the end, well, let me know how I can help further.

     Émeric

Comment 3 Davide Pesavento (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-07-16 18:41:01 UTC
The root problem is most likely in qtdeclarative rather than in qt-creator itself. And it's probably one of its plugins, rather than base IDE, to use QML or some QtQuick-based component, thus causing the crash.

Try launching qt-creator from the command line without plugins:
$ qtcreator -noload all -load Core

and then enable the plugins one by one, restarting qtcreator each time, until you find the plugin that triggers the crash. My first suspects would be the welcome plugin and the Qml designer/profiler plugins.

Same crash, with same backtrace :-(

Is Qt Creator a QML application?

Comment 6 Davide Pesavento (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-07-18 21:48:37 UTC
It looks like even the Core plugin (which is kinda mandatory for the IDE) indirectly uses QJSEngine (it instantiates one, and the crash occurs in the constructor), so I'm afraid you're out of luck on ia64 :(

I don't think there's anything we can do about it in gentoo... Feel free to pursue this upstream though.
