With current git (tried both the current stable dev-vcs/git-2.7.3-r1 and the ~amd64 dev-vcs/git-2.7.4) : * git gui fails with "cannot determine git version" * gitk fails with "cannot find a git repository here" all CLI commands work. This seems to be the same bug than the one reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/git/+bug/1574213

I found a workaround/solution. Another unrelated program (sshvnc) failed with a similar cause : a tcl SIGCHLD handling error. Emerging dev-lang/tcl again with "emerge -1av tcl" fixed both sshvnc and git gui/gitk So it seems something being updated recently on my system broke dev-lang/tcl.
There's something very odd going on. I got the same problem with git gui once again and once again emerge -1av tcl fixed it. I just checked /var/log/emerge.log and there was no emerge since the last emerge -1av tcl.

Same problem here. Please have a look if you have prelink working at your side. Disabling it solved the problem for me. See also bug # 579374.
Indeed disabling prelink solves my problem too.
