On the linuxcompatible.org forums several users expressed interest in trying Gentoo but said they found the full install difficult to understand. One user said: "The directions on Gentoo website make my brain hurt like a college calculus exam!".To your credit they said the only problem with the documents is that there in depth detail is haard at first. Without knowing about the Quick Install Reference I wrote a shorter simplified guide for them, which was very similar to Quick Install Reference. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Expected Results: My suggestion is to move the Quick install Reference into the install portion of the Handbook instead of just the Docs section, along with a suggestion to use the quick reference along with the regular install handbook.
Only the end of the first
This is why we have a "Quick Install Reference": users who already know a bit about Linux/Unix can use this reference to install Gentoo. However, most users have explicitly asked us for more information on all the individual steps (otherwise the installation documentation wouldn't have evolved from a 3-page document to a 100+ page installation booklet). I don't see why we should include the Quick Install Reference in the Gentoo Handbook. Not only lags the Quick Install Reference behind from time to time (as the Installation Instructions in the Gentoo Handbook are the primary source for updates) people will also find it disturbing that they're printing installation instructions twice. We also don't have Quick Install Reference material for all architectures: only x86 and SPARC have such a document. I have to disagree with the quote "The directions on Gentoo website make my brain hurt like a college calculus exam!". Not only are such exams fun to make (/me ducks and hides) but we strive to have our installation instructions as verbose as possible: every important aspect should be described in great detail. If you feel this isn't the case, please report what you find difficult to understand.
