This is the portage make.conf that I used.

Gentoo source: 4.4.6
Intel processor: Q6700, Amd64bit
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 7100
Graphics driver/module: 'nouveau' as reported by lspci -nnk
Symptoms: screen is at least 10 to 15 characters too far to the left making console unusable.

Have done the "Gentoo Linux amd64 Handbook: Installing Gentoo" many/many times over many/many days using both the "Default: Manual configuration" (METHOD 1) and the "Alternative: Using genkernel" (METHOD 2).

Have also tried "Quick Installation Checklist" (METHOD 3) hoping that "# make localyesconfig" would work since the LiveDVD works fine.

The first two methods produce the same video problem/symptom.
The third method halts its kernel compile at "DEPMOD" line and fails to system prompt.

No modules are listed in /etc/conf.d/modules. I've tried making nouveau compiled into kernel but same symptoms.

Thank you,
Ken Busse

How do I run dmesg when I can't use the screen?

Can you use another system and ssh into the box with the video problem (don't forget to enable ssh before!)?
