Description Octavian 2016-05-11 09:46:35 UTC
I ma trying to go back to version 1.15 of xorg-server due to issues with the radeon driver using the latest software stack.

However xorg-server-1.15.2-r4 requires >=media-libs/mesa-10.3.7-r2[nptl=] and this mesa is not in the portage.
The latest mesa from 10.x series is media-libs/mesa-10.3.7-r1
Thus it will try to install version 11.

Is this intended or is this a bug?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.look at xorg-server-1.15.2-r4.ebuild
2. media-libs/mesa-10.3.7-r2 or higher not in portage
3.
Actual Results:
I would expect that media-libs/mesa-10.3.7-r2 to be in portage.

Yes, mesa-11.x matches >=media-libs/mesa-10.3.7-r2[nptl=], which reads 'any mesa version greater or equal than 10.3.7-r2 with nptl USE synchronized with nptl USE of xorg-server'. It's not limited to mesa-10.x only.

However if you experience any problems with mesa-11.x please open a separate bugreport.
Comment 5 Octavian 2016-05-13 00:32:20 UTC
Yes indeed. Why not puting in e-build >=mesa-11?

The fact that it refers to mesa-10*r2 (which does not exist ) is confusing. Also xorg-server 1.12 has the same dependecy. Here also mesa-11 will be picked. will this be a good combination?

I have opened the ticket just to check that the dependency is indeed intended and is not a mistake.

Regarding the opening of a bug for mesa, I will postpone it since I do not have time to collect the proper data. In the meantime I have switched to xorg-server-1.16.4 (not r5 since that depends again of mesa-10*r2).

Best regards,
Octavian

> Yes indeed. Why not puting in e-build >=mesa-11?
Probably because mesa-11.x wasn't even released when xorg-server-1.15.2-r4 ebuild was added to the tree.

> The fact that it refers to mesa-10*r2 (which does not exist ) is confusing.
This may be confusing to you, but such version specifications are actually sane.
Imagine that when a new version of a library is released Gentoo developers would have to retroactively change all ebuilds that depend on this library to include the new version. This is much work for nothing.

This is _expected_ to be a good combination. If you have any actual problems with particular version combinations you should report them. Otherwise don't worry about it too much.

That's fine. If you wish to learn more about how dependencies are specified here's the link: https://devmanual.gentoo.org/general-concepts/dependencies/

It's OK. This part I knew it.
But my question was: why not using *r1 instead of *r2 in the dependency? Then portage could resolve between two very different mesa versions mesa-10*r1 and mesa-11 depending on the other packages. Now it can only pick 11.
And for sure 1.16 can work with both versions.

Looking again at the ebuild I think it starts making more sense, All LATEST xorg-server versions from each serie 1.15/1.16/1.7 are made to build with the latest mesa/eselect-opengl. Previous version (not latest) can work with previous mesa. My (wrong) assumption was that going back to latest from older versions (e.g. 1.15.2-r4) would be able to pick also a previous mesa version.

Thank you for you time,
Octavian
Comment 8 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2016-05-13 07:11:42 UTC
We keep a few older xorg-server versions in the tree because some proprietary drivers don't receive updates to support new xorg-server.
There is no need to use older mesa for that purpose.

Changes in eselect-opengl required that xorg-server and mesa also be updated, and thus nobody bothered to update old mesa ebuilds. For now, you can still use xorg-server-1.15.2-r2 with older mesa.

Also note that we don't recommend older xorg-server, and invest only minimal effort in this. If you find that it works for you, fine. If not, you are probably out of luck.
