Did you verify that ulimit settings were not the cause?
Comment 5 Stelian Ionescu 2016-05-16 00:32:10 UTC
My guess is that PaX is mucking with the memory mappings and something else is mapped at 0x20000000. 1040384 is 1MB and it cannot be a ulimit problem.
Comment 6 Anton Kochkov 2016-10-05 14:07:24 UTC
Can confirm with dev-lisp/sbcl-1.3.9

//Starting build: Wed Oct  5 16:02:57 CEST 2016
//Options: --prefix='/usr' --xc-host='sh /var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/sbcl-1.3.9/work/sbcl-binary/run-sbcl.sh --no-sysinit --no-userinit --disable-debugger'
(running SBCL from: /var/tmp/portage/dev-lisp/sbcl-1.3.9/work/sbcl-binary)
mmap: Operation not permitted
ensure_space: failed to validate 1040384 bytes at 0x20000000
(hint: Try "ulimit -a"; maybe you should increase memory limits.)

Here is my corresponding 'emerge --info' output: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=596238#c0

This means that provided binary should be recompiled using this patch
Comment 11 Andrey Grozin gentoo-dev 2017-01-24 13:31:47 UTC
The sbcl ebuild uses the official sbcl binary (from their site, the version number depends on the arch) to compile the sbcl source, and installs the resulting (locally produced) sbcl. If the official binary does not work on your system, the only way out is to ask the upstream to include this patch (https://sourceforge.net/p/sbcl/sbcl/ci/55abdffb4b920e5e1bf370062eb695e2c17aacd1/) to the next release, and to release the resulting binary which can work on your system. We can do nothing ourselves: in order to compile sbcl sources, we rely on the (official) upstream sbcl binaries.

Let's try to stabilize >=dev-lisp/sbcl-1.4.6 due to bug #640320
