For debugging messages, run it as $ simutrans -debug 5 It will complain about not being able to load language files, and advise the user to "run ./get_lang_files.sh", which is included in the source distribution (although there may be difficulty running it due to DOS-style newlines). That script basically downloads the file at http://simutrans-germany.com/translator/data/tab/language_pack-Base+texts.zip and extracts it to the simutrans/text directory. Comparing the 120.0.1 and 120.1.3 distributions (simutrans-src-*.zip), the latter is missing the language files named *.tab from the simutrans/text directory, and this is the cause of the problem. I was able to start up simutrans 120.1.3 after downloading the base texts zip file and extracting it to /usr/share/games/simutrans/text/.

I suppose the ebuild should provide the missing files somehow, maybe, using http://simutrans-germany.com/translator/data/tab/language_pack-Base+texts.zip as an additional SRC_URI.
