Description peter@prh.myzen.co.uk 2016-04-21 15:47:32 UTC
I have a new desktop machine with a Sapphire Radeon R9 380 Nitro 4G D5 on an Asus X99-A motherboard. Lspci reports it as "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Amethyst XT [Radeon R9 M295X Mac Edition] (rev f1)". I believe that is a mobile device.

I don't know the significance of the "4G D5" tags, but I think this is a recently introduced display card.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.# lspci | grep VGA
2.# lspci -v -s 01:00.0
3.
Actual Results:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Amethyst XT [Radeon R9 M295X Mac Edition] (rev f1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

        Kernel driver in use: amdgpu

Expected Results:
Proper description of a Sapphire Radeon R9 380 Nitro.

I have sys-firmware/amdgpu-ucode-20160331 loaded by the kernel at boot time and the display system appears to run properly.

The only package in /usr/local/portage is a patched version of localepurge to make it acknowledge --nocolor properly.

Try upgrading to the latest pciutils.

This

http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/1002/6939/174be308

might correspond to your card and has only recently been added.

If upgrading does not help, please determine this pci id of your card
using "lspci -n" and, ideally, submit your findings to
http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/ .
Comment 2 Brian Evans (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-04-21 16:35:56 UTC
lspci just looks at the database from sys-apps/hwids.

Have you tried the latest sys-apps/hwids-20160306 ?
Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2016-04-21 20:33:21 UTC
right, lspci just does an id lookup in the upstream database

really should show `lspci -n` as the output you've shown doesn't actually list the numeric IDs ...
Comment 4 peter@prh.myzen.co.uk 2016-04-22 09:43:15 UTC
Okay, sys-apps/hwids is updated to 20160306 and I now get:

# lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tonga XT / Amethyst XT [Radeon R9 380X / R9 M295X Mac Edition] (rev f1)

...which is still not right.

# lspci -n -s 01:00.0
01:00.0 0300: 1002:6938 (rev f1)

This is a puzzle. Lspci finds 6938 but the description of 6939 at http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/ matches my device (subsystem 174b e308). I wonder whether the two devices have been confused at ucw. I've added a discussion note there anyway.

Thanks for your help, gents.
Comment 5 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2016-04-22 17:35:47 UTC
we make no changes to these databases as it'd be untenable to maintain. once upstream is fixed up though, we should be able to roll the fixes easily.

Understood. Thanks.
