Description Bruno Laturner Lemes 2004-07-22 17:51:57 UTC
Yesterday I did a emerge -u world to update what I haven't updated in a week or two, including a r3 of nvidia-glx, r2 of xorg-x11, opengl-update then etc-update, keeping my working xorg.conf the way it should be.
I reboot, go to gdm, to my desktop and the problems begin. Crash.

While at the console, I update the kernel from 2.6.7-r9 to r11. I also go back to xorg-x11-6.7.0-r1(which was working), but the problems still go on.

I'm managing to write this bug with firefox and play some songs in xmms carelessy w/o doing the stuff that will crash X(like alt-tabbing instead of clicking the taskbar to alternate the apps).

I don't know what got broken during the last emerge and etc-update.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. StartX
2. Click anywhere in gnome-panel or
open the "add dir" window in xmms or
move a file within Gnome(so a dialog window opens) or
sometimes just close a window(Be Alt-F4, clicking in the x, etc)
Actual Results:
X crashes, going to the console and produces a:

(...)
"Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting"
(...)

(...) being the normal stuff it does when it loads X and the "Please see url
etc, and Xorg.0.log.

Expected Results:
Continue with its events and actions normally

Im still not quite sure when X crashes...
Could you please provide some more examples of what actions can cause the crash.

Also look in /var/log/emerge.log and see if anything else was updated in relation to X / Gnome.

Does this happen outside of Gnome (some other window manager) or is it specific to Gnome?
Comment 3 Bruno Laturner Lemes 2004-07-23 10:07:08 UTC
What causes crashing:
-in gdm, clicking in any of the buttons that usually leads you to the
language, session and the shutdown/reboot menus.
-when x/gnome loads with apps that you didn't close in the last
session, like x-chat, if don't wait until the desktop is fully loaded,
and you close x-chat as as soon as it loaded, it will crash.
-In firefox, while browsing gmail, when a new mail arrives, it will
pop up a javascript dialog window. Crash... And I didn't even click
anything.

I tried with two other WMs, fluxbox and windowmaker:
-In both of them, while in firefox, if any event makes a popup window show up, it will crash X.

I can't even go back to Gnome because there are so many unsaved open apps(3 x-chats, gnome-terminal, nautilus and gedit) that it will crash while it loads everything. I'm currently running Fluxbox.

Also, I emerged gnome 2.6.2(ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86") and the other 58 dependencies of it, and I'm still getting the same problems.
I don't know if this is related but I tried to 'emerge selectwm' to help me switching the WMs, but:
!!! ERROR: x11-wm/selectwm-0.4 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 25, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)
  Same with 'emerge icewm':
!!! ERROR: x11-wm/icewm-1.2.13 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 74, Exitcode 2
!!! emake failed
  Dunno if it will help.

Now about the emerges, last emerges before the problem, related to X, media and compiling:
  linux26-headers-2.6.7-r3
  libpng-1.2.5-r7
  fontconfig-2.2.2
  opengl-update-1.8.1
xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2(then I went back to r1, but still with the same problems)
  xterm-192
  nvidia-glx-1.0.6106-r3

  Thats it.

Note about th windows that pop-up and etc:
I only get to see the body of the window/dialog window, with no content at all in it. Half a second(pretty fast but the eye still catches it) after that frame of window show up, X crashes, always with the same error.

does this crash also happen when using the 'nv' driver?
Comment 7 Bruno Laturner Lemes 2005-09-20 11:03:41 UTC
Please don't comment on a year old bug, it's been fixed ages ago, and I don't
even remember how I did it(probably a complete reinstall).
