Description Robert Gill 2016-04-14 06:47:20 UTC
I was cleaning up my 'abi_x86_32' use flags and I started receiving the following preserved libs notice after running 'emerge --depclean':

!!! existing preserved libs:
>>> package: x11-libs/libXdamage-1.1.4-r1
 *  - /usr/lib32/libXdamage.so.1
 *  - /usr/lib32/libXdamage.so.1.1.0

 *      used by /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1.2.0 (preserved)
>>> package: x11-libs/libXfixes-5.0.1
 *  - /usr/lib32/libXfixes.so.3
 *  - /usr/lib32/libXfixes.so.3.1.0
 *      used by /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 (preserved)
 *      used by /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1.2.0 (preserved)
>>> package: media-libs/mesa-11.0.6

 *  - /usr/lib32/libglapi.so.0.0.0
 *  - /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1
 *  - /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1.2.0

 *      used by /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1.2.0 (preserved)

I tried reinstalling x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers with the 'multilib' USE flag disabled and I received the following error:

x11-proto/kbproto:0

  (x11-proto/kbproto-1.0.7:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) conflicts with
    >=x11-proto/kbproto-1.0.6-r1[abi_x86_32(-),abi_x86_64(-)] required by (x11-libs/libX11-1.6.3:0/0::gentoo, installed)

I don't really know if media-libs/mesa[abi_x86_32] is required by the 'multilib' USE flag or not, but that's what I'm assuming.

Comment 2 Robert Gill 2016-04-18 02:30:29 UTC
These minimal flags in package.use allowed for 'emerge -upvD --newuse @world' to run without any dependency errors.

sys-libs/zlib       abi_x86_32
x11-libs/libX11     abi_x86_32
x11-libs/libXext    abi_x86_32
x11-proto/kbproto   abi_x86_32
x11-proto/xcb-proto abi_x86_32
x11-proto/xextproto abi_x86_32
x11-proto/xproto    abi_x86_32

The preserved libs notice occurred for nvidia-drivers with the above flags set. emerge @preserved-rebuild did not fix the issue.

Adding 'virtual/opengl abi_x86_32' or 'media-libs/mesa abi_x86_32' and their respective dependencies to package.use and rebuilding prevents the preserved libs notice from occurring.
Comment 3 Robert Gill 2016-04-18 02:42:23 UTC
ebuild version is x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-361.28
Comment 4 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-04-19 07:49:31 UTC
The nvidia-drivers libraries should link to *a* /usr/lib32/libGL.so but since we're shifting those libraries around with the old eselect-opengl implementation, this creates a false link between them. I am still not sure what happened in your case.

Please post your output of `emerge -vpq app-eselect/eselect-opengl`.
