Description groepaz 2016-04-12 08:37:28 UTC
After doing the recently stabilized KDE/Plasma updates, i get strange rendering errors. in particular in the top/left top/right bottom/left bottom/right corners i can see fragments of other application windows - which clearly shouldnt be the case :)
i already updated xorg and drivers as suggested here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572868 but that didnt help (i also have intel-hd graphics).

installed packages that might be relevant:

fwiw, current stable xf86-video-intel works very well on my system, but it's been really hit-and-miss depending on your combination of hardware and software versions with Intel lately...

That is:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-r2
x11-base/xorg-server-1.17.4

Doesn't limit me to an old kernel though, I'm running 4.5.0 gentoo-sources at the same time.
Comment 2 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2016-04-12 15:41:11 UTC
Please list the versions of kernel, xorg-server and xf86-video-intel that you have installed.
Comment 3 groepaz 2016-04-12 15:58:03 UTC
kernel 3.18.11-gentoo #1 SMP (yeah a bit old, i will upgrade as soon as i find the time...)
xorg-server-1.17.4
xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-r2
Comment 4 groepaz 2016-04-12 15:59:47 UTC
forgot: i had the same problem with earlier versions of xorg-server and xf86-video-intel (thats why i upgraded, these are non stable on amd64)
Comment 5 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2016-04-12 16:00:46 UTC
Running modern xf86-video-intel with old kernel is known to cause problems.
Please use latest stable or latest unstable versions of both.
Comment 6 groepaz 2016-04-12 16:07:31 UTC
as said, i had the problems before, and only upgraded to the unstable versions because the above mentioned bug suggested it might fix it (it didnt). i am sure downgrading again will not fix it either for that matter :)
Comment 7 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2016-04-12 16:34:00 UTC
Use either

gentoo-sources-4.1.15-r1
xorg-server-1.17.4
xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-r2

or

gentoo-sources-4.5.0-r1
xorg-server-1.18.3
xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20160410

You can try with older kernels, but in that case you may also have to downgrade xf86-video-intel further to 2.21.15
Comment 8 groepaz 2016-04-12 17:24:30 UTC
ok, so, upgraded kernel, downgraded xorg and drivers:

gentoo-sources-4.1.15-r1
xorg-server-1.17.4
xorg-drivers-1.17
xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-r2

...still the same issue :(

(if that matters, my desktop resolution is 1600x1200, using one screen only)

maybe this helps, this is the lspci -v output for the GFX "chip" (integrated into CPU)

After upgrading to kernel 4.6.2 and KDE Plasma 5.6.5, I have no issues with Intel graphics anymore. Perhaps you should try that combination too?
Comment 11 Philip Nystromer 2016-08-12 17:56:04 UTC
I have a similar problem as of July 2017. See bug report 590894 (see the screenshot attachment there).

I am running
gentoo-sources-4.4.6-gentoo
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-r2
x11-base/xorg-server-1.17.4
x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.17
kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.6.5

These packages are the ones in the stable tree as of 2016-08-12.

My graphics HW is Intel HD Graphics 5500

Can anyone confirm that the above combination gives the problems mentioned in this bug report and in bug report 590894?
Comment 12 Lukas Polacek 2016-08-19 08:40:34 UTC
On my parents computer I saw graphical issues, then upgraded kernel to 4.6.X and problems went away. Everything else is installed as a stable version. Have you tried a newer kernel?
Comment 13 groepaz 2016-12-23 14:25:42 UTC
finally found some time for updating my desktop.... the problem is still there, using these (stable system):

gentoo-sources-4.4.26
xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20160621-r1
xorg-server-1.18.4
xorg-drivers-1.18-r1
plasma-meta-5.8.3
Comment 14 Matt Turner gentoo-dev 2017-01-29 07:20:41 UTC
We have zero ability to solve problems like this. Please file a bug upstream:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=DRI&component=DRM/intel

Two suggestions:

Try the 2.99.917_p20161206 unstable version of xf86-video-intel
 Try a 4.9.x series kernel
Comment 15 groepaz 2017-02-13 10:26:29 UTC
> Try the 2.99.917_p20161206 unstable version of xf86-video-intel
> Try a 4.9.x series kernel

just for the records: none of that changes anything :(
Comment 16 Michael Palimaka (kensington) gentoo-dev 2017-02-13 10:34:36 UTC
By the way, I suggest anyone having trouble with the Intel driver try dropping it and using modesetting instead. This is the default now in some major distributions, is recommended by KDE upstream, and is working well personally for me.
Comment 17 groepaz 2017-02-13 10:38:19 UTC
exactly the same problem with modesetting here :(
