Description Josiah Ritchie (flickerfly) 2004-07-20 10:56:19 UTC
I found that when I went to clone a PC using netcat and dd across a network that netcat wasn't on the disk. The was solved easily enough by putting it on a USB stick, but the addition of netcat to the LiveCD would make it even more flexible and useful in the future as an all purpose rescue CD.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

We're not adding anything else to the LiveCD (2004.2 is already completed and in testing)...

I'm marking this as LATER, because we are going to be producing a Knoppix-like CD in the future, which will be the rescue environment. In fact, I am going to be reducing the number of items on the current LiveCD to *only* what is required for an install on various hardware.

Our installation media has simply become too bloated.

Cool, An emergency specific LiveCD tool would be great for this sort of thing. :-)

Also, I like the idea of smaller downloads to update my media so appreciate you keeping an eye on the kb bottom line.

I'll look forward to it.

I'm going to reopen now that Project Dolphin is alive and kicking...
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-03 08:20:43 UTC
Well, though we won't add this to the minimal CD, it has been added to Project Dolphin, and also to my spec files for the Gentoo LiveCD, which will be a complete LiveCD environment/GRP replacement, rather than just an install disk.

Once either Dolphin becomes an officially-supported project (it is still very beta now) or the LiveCD becomes official release media, then I'll RESOLVE this one.

I came looking for this feature today myself. I have a working Pundit-R and want
to clone it to 3 more identical systems. I had assumed that the Universal
install CD would have nc but it didn't. throw in my wish that it was there also.
Seems like a natural since this Gentoo Wiki led me to think it would be there.

Anyway, thanks for listening.
