Description Stefan Bruda 2004-07-19 16:35:36 UTC
I finally succeeded in building GNOME (PPC stable) on PPC64, but it does not
quite work quite out of the box. The following are needed:

 o  epiphany PPC stable (1.2.2) does not build, but PPC devel (1.2.6) does;
    it also works as expected.

Supplementary note: epiphany is linked against mozilla 1.7 patched as
per bug#54843 and works in this configuration even if mozilla itself
    segfaults.

o media-libs/glut does not build unless uname -m and arch report ppc
(instead of ppc64 as they normally report). With this hack it builds
    alright.

o net-print/gnome-cups-manager PPC stable (0.17) does not build, but PPC
    devel (0.18) does.

I did nto have a chance to really test the GNOME installation, since I still
have some issues with X, but at least it builds. :-)

GNOME-2.6 does work on PPC64. There are some quirks, for instance
gnome-terminal with pseudo-transparency enabled bring the load of both my
processors to 100% (sic!) for such a simple thing as listing a (small)
directory (will try without transparency next time I get near Turing's
console). For the time being I stay with xterms. Anyway, I was saying,
there are some quirks, but the main functionality seems to be there.

Will provide a screenshot soon.

Newsflash: gnome-terminal now works, I don't not quite know what happened to
it yesterday (temperamental the little bastard is). In all, I have yet to
find a bug in my 64-bit GNOME installation (though I am sure there are some,
I just did not encounter them).

Here are the promised screenshots: First, a GNOME desktop with a terminal,
XPDF, and XEmacs is at http://turing.ubishops.ca/home/bruda/turing-gnome.png
and since I am at it you can see a recursive screenshot at
http://turing.ubishops.ca/home/bruda/turing-gnome-rec.png . Note in passing the newly installed themes and background image.

ok.. I know this is unfair, but tgall opened the bug #58191 and yours is older, but... life is unfair ^_^ and this bug is not up to date..

I'll mark this as WONTFIX. Don't take it personal, it's just a matter of clearness. :-)
