I'm using a 2.6 kernel. Every tie I try to emerge -puv world it wants to install sys-kernel/linux-headers. Shouldn't the fact that I have sys-kernel/linux26-headers installed satisty the dependancy?

All linux26-header ebuilds have a PROVIDE for virtual/os-headers, you should check your /var/cache/edb/virtuals file.
