Version 5.0.0 of ParaView is out since a while and 5.0.1 will come soon (sometime in February). Major changes are the new renderer, utilizing OpenGL 3.2, which needs to be enabled using -DVTK_RENDERING_BACKEND=OpenGL2 (be aware that for OSMesa support, this needs Mesa 11.2, as a new function in OSMesa has to be used to get the correct OpenGL context), as well as the new EGL Off-Screen rendering capability (with hardware acceleration, unlike OSMesa), which needs to be enabled using -DVTK_USE_OFFSCREEN_EGL=True https://blog.kitware.com/paraview-5-0-0-available-for-download/ https://blog.kitware.com/off-screen-rendering-through-the-native-platform-interface-egl/ https://blog.kitware.com/messing-with-mesa-for-paraview-5-0vtk-7-0/
P.S: Another change in VTK 7.0 is Python 3 support, GCC 4.2+ being required, C++11 being supported (via a CMake option), Java support requiring Java 1.6+, better support for building without QtWebKit: https://blog.kitware.com/vtk-7-0-0/
