I'm not sure if this is macos specific, but the only portage .51_pre13 only shows the following output during emerge sync:

         1126 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
         560 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
         170 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
         735 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
        1096 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
         176 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
         729 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
        1024 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00
         298 100%    0.00kB/s    0:00:00

Is this a new feature or a macos bug?

that output is from rsync anyway.

Darwin 8 is supposed to have a more recent rsync that fixes third roblem. Panther has rsync version 2.5.7, maybe a simple versioncheck could fix this problem?

Mac OS X 10.3 with the latest update has rsync 2.6.2 and I can see the file names
during emerge sync (so it is not a problem anymore?).

This is solved by getting the latest updates from Apple.  Specifically, the updates referred to as Security Update 2004-09-07" (1.1) is the update containing this newer version of rsync.  Changing bug resolution to UPSTREAM.
