After s few world updates, I noticed today that two init scripts belonging to VirtualBox no longer worked: zathras ~ # /etc/init.d/vboxdrv status /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: line 97: /sbin/functions.sh: No such file or directory zathras ~ # /etc/init.d/vboxnet status /etc/init.d/vboxnet: line 85: /sbin/functions.sh: No such file or directory That file has gone - I don't know whether the scripts are/were using an obsolete file location or if I'm suddenly missing a package that would have provided the file, i. e. there is a missing dependency. After manually changing the line from . /sbin/functions.sh to . /etc/init.d/functions.sh the problem seems to have been resolved. There are no such init scripts in the app-emulation/virtualbox-5.0.12 package. Any chance you added them manually? Can you please attach both scripts to this bug?

That would explain why equery b couldn't assign them to any ebuild. I'm fairly sure I didn't put them there manually, I try to avoid doing such things. Nothing in /var/log/portage mentions these files either. I've uploaded them anyway...
Both init scripts are definitely not from Gentoo. You can see that easily from their headers. All Gentoo init scripts have headers like: #!/sbin/runscript # Copyright 1999-2016 Gentoo Foundation # Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2 or similar (openrc init scripts have 2-clause BSD license so their headers look different). By a quick glance I suppose these are universal init scripts shipped with virtualbox upstream packages. Unfortunately we don't support them although upstream seems to have made the scripts Gentoo compatible. A quick fix would be to replace "/sbin/functions.sh" with " /lib/gentoo/functions.sh" Please let me know if that helps you.
It appears to fix the issue - although, after your explanations, I'm unsure whether I need these scripts at all...?
