For a newby (like me) it might be helpful to add a line to the handbook (chapter 5.e. Configuring the Compile Options) that explicitly advises to copy /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf.example to /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf , before editing /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf. [When I first followed the instructions I only made a few changes to the original (very small) /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf, thus missing several useful 'defaults' from the /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf.example]. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. n/a 2. 3.
Overwriting make.conf with the .example is not a good idea because it would force users to redefine the CFLAGS and CHOST themselves and that would generate more problems that it would solve. FYI, stage3 comes with a matching but indeed very short make.conf. It would be a better idea to load the .example into the .conf (Ctrl-R in nano).
That, and most of the values in make.conf.example are default values which are automatically used. Marking as WONTFIX.
