Description Thomas Buchmann 2004-07-15 01:39:41 UTC
X always freezes when i move a window (e.g. xterm). I have to press reset button to restart the system (CTRL+ALT+Backspace is not working). No window manager is working. Each of them is freezing during startup (when first windows are shown).
My hardware configuration is: AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 512 MB DDR333, ASRock K7S8XE+ Board (SiS 748+964), ATI Radeon 9600Pro 128 MB.
I tried with and without ati-drivers. When i'm using ati-drivers X starts and freezes with a black screen (only pressing reset button helps).

In the future, please attach things like that rather than inlining them.
Comment 2 Thomas Buchmann 2004-07-15 13:58:19 UTC
i found out that this was obviously related to a hardware bug or hardware incompatibility of my SiS 746 chipset. After using kernel 2.6.7.-gentoo-r11 and remerging the ati-drivers i can run X with direct rendering on w/o problems up to now. no more freezes.
