Description George Diamantopoulos 2016-01-08 21:48:15 UTC
After updating the qt-overlay with git, the following error is printed a random number of times (nearly) every time emerge is run, even in pretend mode:

/usr/portage/eclass/eutils.eclass: line 102: no match: _ESTACK_eshopts_[1]
/usr/portage/eclass/eutils.eclass: line 102: no match: _ESTACK_eshopts_[0]

for some reason, this is not reproducible every time. For example (as suggested by iamben at #gentoo), doing:

emerge -pvO $(qlist -IC dev-qt/)

produced the errors the first time, but running it again immediately after doesn't.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install or update the qt-overlay
2. emerge something
3. if that doesn't work, try emerge -pvO $(qlist -IC dev-qt/)
Actual Results:
portage executed, but produced several lines of the error/warning:

/usr/portage/eclass/eutils.eclass: line 102: no match: _ESTACK_eshopts_[0]

Expected Results:
portage should execute without errors or warnings

Comment 1 Davide Pesavento (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-01-09 01:17:00 UTC
Yes we're aware of this. The error is produced because 'failglob' is set in ebuild global scope since EAPI 6, and some glob match is failing.
Comment 2 Davide Pesavento (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2016-01-09 01:35:12 UTC
Line 102 of eutils.eclass is:

	eval unset ${_estack_name}\[${_estack_i}\]

which after the eval becomes:

	unset _ESTACK_eshopts_[1]

Now I guess the bracketed expression is interpreted as a pattern match during pathname expansion, and since nothing matches "1" and failglob is set, the expansion fails loudly.

base-system?

I just got this as part of a full gentoo tree repoman (stage2 rewrite code) run while testing the rebased code.

RepoMan scours the neighborhood...

Comment 4 Sergey Popov gentoo-dev 2016-01-20 08:04:16 UTC
As said before - this is not qt overlay specific. Moreover, error message is contr-intuitive and does not help to track actual globbing error, that are probably resides in ebuild or eclass

For example, i hit this when i am trying to port boost ebuild to EAPI 6
Comment 5 Michał Górny archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2016-01-20 08:19:23 UTC
Pretty solution: stop using all the ugly, broken *_push() and *_pop() functions from eutils. Possibly ban them in EAPI 6 and teach people to use local variables.

You pinpointed the problem. unset is not a programming construct but just a builtin function. So its argument must be quoted here:

    unset "_ESTACK_eshopts_[1]"
