I run "/usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemons &" from .xinitrc so that I'll get pretty fonts & whatnot. However, recently (the only thing I can think of is that I emerged new versions of gaim and xmms, which emerged a new gnome component (can't remember what, though), gnome-settings-daemon doesn't change the settings for a good 20 minutes to half an hour. Also, control-center's window doesn't come up for about 5-10 minutes, after which it takes a very long time for it to launch the programs controlling fonts, colors etc. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Emerge newfangled gnome component 2. startx 3. Wait forever Actual Results: Not caused the gnome applications to use the selected fonts & resolutions, etc. Expected Results: Caused the gnome applications to use the selected fonts etc. Portage 2.0.50-r9 (default-x86-2004.0, gcc-3.3.3, glibc-2.3.3.20040420-r0, 2.6.6) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.6 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.58-r1 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control"CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X aim alsa apm avi berkdb cdr crypt cups dvd emacs encode esd foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gpm gtk gtk2 gtkhtml imlib java jpeg jpg libg++ libwww mad mikmod motif mozilla mpeg msn ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python quicktime readline sdl slang spell ssl svga tcltk tcpd tetex truetype unicode x86 xml2 xmms xv yahoo zlib"
What is your hostname, and is it present in /etc/hosts ? This could be a name resolution issue.
