Description Michael Sokolar 2004-07-11 04:43:17 UTC
In KDE 3.2.2 as root everything works perfect and i can normally open the konsole, but when logged in as a user and want to open the konsole it opens the konsole window but the cursor just keeps blinking and there is no shell, everything else is ok.

I tried various things but nothing solved this problem.
Comment 1 Gregorio Guidi (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-07-11 06:55:55 UTC
I would check: the output of "ps aux" when the konsole is stuck,
the output of "ls -l /dev/pt*"

do you have sys-apps/utempter installed?
Comment 2 Michael Sokolar 2004-07-11 11:59:42 UTC
the output of "ps aux" in dependence to the konsole in kde says: "kdeinit: konsole", thats it

and the output of "ls -l /dev/pt*" doesnt really say something i can do with it, i am not that used to linux...
Comment 3 Gregorio Guidi (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-07-11 15:26:47 UTC
Well, it could be useful if you could copy and paste the output of those
commands, and maybe of 'emerge info'. And prepare to 'emerge dev-util/strace'
since you don't fear to get used to linux, do you? ;)
Comment 4 CarlUman 2004-08-30 12:11:51 UTC
I'm having this same problem. Another problem that may or may not be related is that after typing in the root password for kuser I get the message...
The program 'su' is not found!
Make sure your PATH is set correctly.
This is from 2004.2 cd installed and emerged over the weekend. Running full udev if that makes any difference.
Comment 5 CarlUman 2004-08-30 19:22:31 UTC
Yes, I have sys-apps/utempter installed ver 0.5.5.5. Is that bad?

Now the output for ls -l /dev/pt* I did for both root and my user login. The only difference is for root it had these extra lines...
crw--w---- 1 root tty 136, 0 Aug 30 20:40 0
crw------- 1 root tty 136, 1 Aug 30 20:47 1

That is a lot of output. I sure hope that is what you were looking for since the orginator hasn't followup yet.

Thanks

Comment 6 Gregorio Guidi (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-31 03:21:53 UTC
Sorry but I can't see a clear solution.
Just check if you have write permission on /dev/ptmx (You should have these
lines in the udev permissions file)

	# pty devices
	# Set this to 0660 if you only want users belonging to tty group
	# to be able to allocate PTYs
	ptmx:root:tty:0666

and try running konsole from inside an xterm to see if there's some useful
output.
Comment 7 CarlUman 2004-09-01 07:04:38 UTC
I followed the steps as outlined by the site below for udev and everything reported here is fine. To me this does not appear to be a bug but rather a setup issue so follow the udev primer :) (That primer should be the gentoo docs howto instead of a link to it.

No reply from original reporter, please open a new bug with full information
('emerge info', etc) if it's still a problem.
