starting firefox results in the usual half-dozen threads (which stay there until I kill them, but NO WINDOW. I've tried blowing away ~/.[mozilla|phoenix|gconf*|gnome*] to no avail... firefox-bin-0.8* works just fine, as does the copy of 0.9.1 that I just built. Suspect something weird w/ what the -bin version is built against vs. my system. Someone else I know is having the same problems; I will try to get him to post here too. Also note that this USED to work fine, so it's very very likely an issue w/ what firefox is linking against as far as libs go... How about 0.9.3? What happens when you specify a URL on the cmdline? firefox-bin http://google.com/
Same deal. Here are some stdout errors I never noticed before, though (there's also some stuff about not being able to load various modules, which is expected, because for ex. I have no 32-bit java): /opt/firefox/mozilla-xremote-client: Error: Failed to find a running server. No running windows found (firefox-bin:1020): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib (firefox-bin:1020): Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers This, of course, seems to have a LOT to do with what's going wrong. I wish I'd picked this one out of the crowd sooner :x
I am also experiencing problems with firefox-bin (also running fluxbox although not convinced that's the problem). Firefox-bin sometimes works properly, but most of the time it loads but with no windows. Also, from the network activity it appears to be loading the pages ok. System is x86_64.
Christopher: does 0.8* work fine for you, too? might be a good reference point for finding the obvious behavioral differences and correcting them in 0.9*
firefox-bin-0.8 appears to run normally (apart from the usual character set conversion errors - see below). $ firefox-bin No running windows found (firefox-bin:10454): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib (firefox-bin:10454): Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers (firefox-bin:10454): Gdk-WARNING **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING: Conversion from character set 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1' is not supported (last error message repeated several times) These error messages are displayed on v0.9x too.

this appears to work again as of xorg-x11-6.8.0 but I'm not 100% sure if that's WHAT made it work. haven't tried it in a while. if anyone feels like testing, go nuts. I will when I have time.
Certain fluxbox styles appear to break it. Artwiz for example, which I was using when I first encountered this problem. I'm currently using a third-party style called crx-alpha, which appears to work just fine with firefox. Weird :)
Verified that this is STILL broken with 1.0_pre-r1.
Having similar problems, with error messages as detailed in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=241477. The interaction between fluxbox and firefox seems to be the culprit, as a test-switch to openbox got firefox to start up. But openbox isn't pretty.
I tried locally building a 32-bit binary in a 32-bit chroot environment. It had the same problems as the precompiled versions. A trick fix of mine had been to: 1.start firefox 2.killall firefox-bin 3.restart fluxbox 4.run firefox That usually did the job for me. But I think I may have found a more perminant solution. I was playing with my theme the other day and added window.borderWidth: 1 window.borderColor: #999999 to the theme file. Since then firefox has started without a hitch. Someone should check out if this also works for them. It could be a clue as to what is causing the problem.
Doesn't sound like a firefox problem, rather a fluxbox issue. Re-assigning
Yeah, fluxbox 0.9.10 has font 'issues' if you have antialiasing enabled and if you're using fonts with broken encodings (artwiz, for example). Upstream know about it and are going to fix it before the next release.

Using deepblue theme, I tried the solution from Eythor. Nothing happens, always the same error, both mozilla-bin and firefox-bin start but the main window doesn't appear. Fluxbox 0.9.12-r1 Firefox-bin 1.0.2 Mozilla-bin 1.7.6-r1
Mozilla-bin works fine with my 0.9.10-r4 (seemingly regardless of theme). Supposedly the newer version (.12) also doesn't play nice with native (64-bit) firefox either, so I haven't even bothered trying. You may want to try downgrading for the time being.
