Errcode 1 (Invalid byte sequence in conversion input) ... and so on. if i load on of those files in xmms i'll get completely foobar chars where i should get "ä,ü,ö,ß,Ä,Ü,Ö,..." chars. they are acutally iso8859-15 characters and xmms changes it's behavoir of reading them every new release too. why can't there be a uniform standard?
Please dont use xmms to test, it's charset handling is far from perfect. Could you please post the output of "locale" and let me know if its mp3s or oggs that you are working with.
nt@eNTi $ locale LANG= LC_CTYPE=de_AT@euro LC_NUMERIC="POSIX" LC_TIME="POSIX" LC_COLLATE="POSIX" LC_MONETARY="POSIX" LC_MESSAGES="POSIX" LC_PAPER="POSIX" LC_NAME="POSIX" LC_ADDRESS="POSIX" LC_TELEPHONE="POSIX" LC_MEASUREMENT="POSIX" LC_IDENTIFICATION="POSIX" LC_ALL= in this case mp3's. but i had similar problems with ogg's in the past as well. i'll test them... too. what program do you suggest?

i think i hit a bug thats ether this one or close what seems to fix it is making your locale look somethin like below cause when it didnt work everything was set to C cept LANG (including LC_ALL) reason was set to C is for work around for fluxbox for me i have LANG and LC_COLLATE set in /etc/env.d/99local hope this helps LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE=C LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ALL=
did anyone try Bret's suggestion from comment #4 ? what was the result?
Please try 0.31-r5, it includes a revamp of the filename handling code (not sure if this will solve these problems, since these are probably tag-related issues).
Ok... Hopefully this is somewhat solved now. Unfortunately id3lib is broken and doesn't work with UTF-8 properly.. the author is planning to migrate to taglib soon. So I'm not worried if you can't write some tags to MP3 files. On the other hand, if you have any troubles with non-ASCII characters in any other files (e.g. ogg) then please reopen this bug.
