Not exactly a new problem, or unrelated to this bug, but yes, a new bug. I just created Bug 586858. Total failure to emerge on Gentoo unstable amd64.
(In reply to Gary E. Miller from comment #9) no one has reported it before, so it's a new problem/bug this bug is about stabilization. failures in unstable do not block that. so if it's building in a stable system, that bug report isn't an issue.

If the package can't ebuild, it does not belong in stable. I look forward to someone fixing it soon.
(In reply to Gary E. Miller from comment #11) sorry, but you're mistaken. a package failing to build in unstable does not logically mean it fails to build in stable. if a package builds fine with all stable packages, then it is perfectly valid to stabilize it. this is how it's always been.
i don't think that bug is relevant to stable, so i've done the rest now
