it appears that running startx makes the ttys lose font settings, maybe other stuff.. basically the screen switches to a term with the default font, but the old number of columns and rows (i'm using a 8x9 font, instead of 8x16) typing clear will bring the current line to the top of the screen, reset does not fix the problem Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. startx 2. quit x 3. try to use cli Actual Results: text does not scroll properly, font reset to 8x16, screen cols and rows still appropriate for 8x9 Expected Results: text should scroll correctly paul@jennifer grub $ emerge info Portage 2.0.50-r8 (default-x86-2004.0, gcc-3.3.3, glibc-2.3.3.20040420-r0, 2.6.7-gentoo-r8) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.7-gentoo-r8 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.00GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r3 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=pentium4 -march=pentium4 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=pentium4 -march=pentium4 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.ccccom.com/ http://ftp-mirror.internap.com/pub/gentoo/ http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X berkdb crypt doc gdbm gif innodb java mbox mmx mysql ncurses pam perl pic pwdb readline sasl sse ssl threads truetype x86 zlib" paul@jennifer grub $ cat /etc/X11/XF86Config Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "XFree86 Configured" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection Section "Files" RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb" ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/" EndSection Section "Module" Load "record" Load "extmod" Load "dbe" Load "dri" Load "glx" Load "xtrap" Load "type1" Load "speedo" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "keyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" Option "XkbModel" "pc104" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "Auto" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" EndSection Section "Monitor" #DisplaySize 400 300 # mm Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "SAM" ModelName "SyncMaster" DisplaySize 393 295 HorizSync 30.0 - 115.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0 Modeline "1600x1200@88" 320.00 1600 1632 2840 2872 1200 1222 1239 1261 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" ### Available Driver options are:- ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False", ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz" ### [arg]: arg optional #Option "NoAccel" # [<bool>] #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>] #Option "ColorKey" # <i> #Option "CacheLines" # <i> #Option "Dac6Bit" # [<bool>] #Option "DRI" # [<bool>] #Option "NoDDC" # [<bool>] #Option "ShowCache" # [<bool>] #Option "XvMCSurfaces" # <i> Identifier "Card0" Driver "i810" VendorName "Intel Corp." re-running /etc/init.d/consolefont fixes the issue... presumably this is a problem with the video card driver please let me know if there's any further info or testing i should do
system changed (reinstall), not reproduceable anymore
