I found a bug in the Suse tracker for this same issue: https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=937767 It also includes a fix which may be applicable to Gentoo.
The previous version dev-db/mariadb-10.0.21-r1 does not have this problem.
Please attach the /var/lib/mysql/irrational.err for at least one startup attempt. The my_print_defaults message is most likely not the cause of the failure, but may be related to other changes.

Maybe you could try rebuilding mariadb. Some days ago I encountered a similar problem, but luckily I found some information in the log file: /usr/sbin/mysqld: error while loading shared libraries: libbfd-2.25.1.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory However, the file did exist: # find / -name libbfd* /usr/lib64/binutils/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/2.25.1/libbfd.so /usr/lib64/binutils/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/2.25.1/libbfd-2.25.1.so I noticed that although the last update for binutils was on Aug 28, there was an update for binutils-config on Sep 27. So I rebuilt mariadb and then it started without any problem.

MariaDB needs a dep on binutils-lib for build and runtime.
Please retry with dev-db/mariadb-10.0.8 which includes its own service file from upstream.
