I've updated (no internal changes) the afl-fuzz to 1.94b.
It works like a charm.

there's a build error if you have clang installed *and* your CFLAGS contains switches that clang doesn't understand. i'm not sure what the proper approach would be here, it goes beyond afl itself as there will have to be some high-level toolchain change here to provide different CFLAGS to gcc and clang if the latter will ever be supported as a system compiler on gentoo...

@PaX Team: Can you comment in #559738 what CFLAGS you are using that cause trouble? Then we can have the discussion on how to handle the clang plugin issue over there.
