As stated on the upstream website, this version of xosview was forked from version 1.8.3 and not the latest available 1.16 version. We should carefully think about how to add this version to portage. Right now I'd be in favor of adding xosview2 as a separate package as long as it can be installed in parallel with xosview-1.x.

If it can be installed alongside the original, why not use a slot?  If it were not the same author, a separate package would make more sense to me.
