In gentoo-dev-sources, when I have my NIC enabled, after it runs for a while, the following appear in dmesg:

I notice that this only happen when I have NIC enabled (thru dhcp). If I don't use the NIC, this won't happen. Then, a check at /proc/interrupts show:

Notice in IRQ 10, the "100000" is fixed in this cased. When it increment to 100000, the error occur. If NIC is not enabled, it will remain at 2 and will not increment.

I notice that in my system configuration screen before the OS boot, NIC and USB share the same IRQ, that's IRQ 10. If I disable APM and ACPI together in the BIOS and kernel, the uhci is mapped to IRQ 26, and the error still occur. But with ACPI enabled in BIOS and kernel, the NIC is mapped to IRQ 19, the exact same as seen in Windows XP. uhci remains at IRQ 10 in both cases.

NOTE: This error also happen in the vanilla 2.6 kernel i fetched from www.kernel.org and happen in gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.6 until the latest available at the time of writing. I did not try previous version of kernel. It did not happen when I was using kernel 2.4 with Debian before I shift to Gentoo. When this error occured, USB no longer can be used.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot gentoo-dev-sources
2. Have NIC enabled
3. Wait a while and then the following in /proc/interrupts

i tried development-sources 2.6.8-rc2 and the problem went away. :) i will use it for a while and see if there is any problem but so far so good

I used to have the same problem with various flavours of the 2.6 kernel. I am currently using the  2.6.8-gentoo-r3 kernel and it happened on me too.
I googled and I found that this could be caused by spurious interrupts caused by the IO-APIC code.
Can you try booting your old kernels with "nolapic" and see if it solves the problem.
It worked on mine.
