same for firefox both are going stable they are the new esr builds.

OK, we will see if 38.1 builds then. In the mozilla bug report the target
milestone is mozilla39

the patch has been included in our patchset since 38.0 I am sure it will compile

any chance to get the dep on freetype adjusted in -31.x? because of a extension I'm unable to upgrade immediately...

Just add the patch from the bug a mentioned in 
/etc/portage/patches/www-client/firefox

Then you can build with latest/unstable freetype
