Same here. There seems to be some problem with the octave-4.0.0-llvm-3.5.patch
Comment 2 Mark Wright gentoo-dev 2015-07-09 11:43:42 UTC
Thanks for the report. Can you please let us know the output of:

equery list sys-devel/autoconf-archive
ls -al /usr/share/aclocal/ax_check_compile_flag.m4

When you built it, octave-4.0.0 did not have a dependency on
sys-devel/autoconf-archive
From your report I think it needs it, I'm adding (soon, after I compile it again)
the missing dependency on:

jit? ( >=sys-devel/autoconf-archive-2015.02.24 )

Which is for the llvm 3.5 patch (from an upstream bug report)
Comment 3 Francisco J. Vazquez 2015-07-09 12:25:45 UTC
Had the same error; manually installing sys-devel/autoconf-archive before octave fixes it for me.

I think this:

       has_version ">=sys-devel/llvm-3.5" && \
               epatch "${FILESDIR}"/${PN}-4.0.0-llvm-3.5.patch

will need to be changed too (e.g. I have llvm >= 3.5 installed but USE -jit).

1) equery list sys-devel/autoconf-archive:

!!! No installed packages matching 'sys-devel/autoconf-archive'
 * Searching for autoconf-archive in sys-devel ...
2) ls -al /usr/share/aclocal/ax_check_compile_flag.m4
ls: cannot access /usr/share/aclocal/ax_check_compile_flag.m4: no such file or folder

3) emerging autoconf-archive wipes out the two above problems and now octave builds just fine. :)

Thanks, I think its ok to apply the patch (and now a second patch) anyway
though with USE=-jit.

Fix applied, thanks for testing and helping, will close this soon unless
there are reports of the fix not working in some configurations

Using commit message:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fix Bug 554290 - sci-mathematics/octave-4.0.0 fails to build - syntax error near unexpected token -std=c++11, AX_CHECK_COMPILE_FLAG(-std=c++11,' - thanks to Nikolaos Chatzidakis for reporting, PL Hayes, Francisco Vazquez for helping. Correct --without-64 to --disable-64. Apply octave-4.0.0-llvm-3.5-gnulib-hg.patch from http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?41061 to fix compile error with some configurations (gcc 4.8.3 in a mostly stable chroot with llvm 3.5.0, USE=jit)

Hi Mark. It still won't work for anyone with my configuration: USE=-jit, installed llvm >= 3.5, autoconf-archive not installed.

Duh, thanks for patiently pointing that out, it seems obvious with the benefit
of sleep and coffee. Added use jit your earlier suggestion to
protect applying the patch:

-       has_version ">=sys-devel/llvm-3.5" && \
+       use jit && \
+               has_version ">=sys-devel/llvm-3.5" && \
                epatch "${FILESDIR}"/${PN}-4.0.0-llvm-3.5.patch && \
                epatch "${FILESDIR}"/${PN}-4.0.0-llvm-3.5-gnulib-hg.patch
