We've deprecated 2.4 kernels in favor of 2.6 kernels. Can you try a 2.6 kernel and report back if dri doesn't work there (it should work just fine)
I emerged gentoo-dev-sources (2.6.7-r14). If I try to emerge xfree-drm-4.3.0-r7 now, it says: "!!! Please link //usr/src/linux to 2.4 kernel sources. xfree-drm does not yet work with 2.6 kernels, use the DRM in the kernel."
