Description Martin Wegner 2015-06-17 12:16:40 UTC
After the upgrade to thunderbird-38.0.1 thunderbird segfaults when started:

$ thunderbird
(process:17349): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed
enigmail.js: Registered components
mimeVerify.jsm: module initialized
[1]    17349 segmentation fault  thunderbird

This happens on both of my Gentoo desktop installations. I ran thunderbird with gdb, and will attach the output including a backtrace after the segfault to this report.

Looking at the backtrace it seems that this is related to =app-misc/tracker-1.4.0 with USE flag thunderbird enabled. And indeed, if I disable that USE flag for tracker:

  $ sudo USE="-thunderbird" emerge -a1v tracker

thunderbird successfully starts again. So this is a workaround for now.

I've also tried the command suggested in the einfo of the thunderbird ebuild ( $ rm ${HOME}/.thunderbird/*/extensions.sqlite ) to no avail, thunderbird still crashes afterwards.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Emerge =app-misc/tracker-1.4.0[thunderbird] and =mail-client/thunderbird-38.0.1
2. Try to start thunderbird
Actual Results:
Thunderbird crashes with a segfault.

Expected Results:
Should not crash, of course.

Backtrace of thunderbird segfault when run with gdb.
Comment 2 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-06-19 16:44:06 UTC
Can you please report this to upstream at bugzilla.gnome.org against "tracker" and paste the backtrace in a comment (to let their setup to detect possible duplicated bugs). Then, post the link here to let us review it. Also please tell us what sqlite version are you running

Thanks!
Comment 3 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-07-09 10:01:44 UTC
were you able to report it finally? (it's better that it's reported by the affected people as he/she will be the best one to reply to upstream questions as he can test the problems directly)

Thanks
Comment 4 Ian Stakenvicius (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-07-24 14:30:14 UTC
Yep. Tracker is not compatible with thunderbird-38 , at least not the current version of tracker. Tracker upstream needs to upgrade their addon to make it compatible. Mozilla upstream has (or will soon be) blacklisting that addon for thunderbird-38.

Please note that gentoo is not the only distro affecting this. Suse installs for instance have caused this issue to be the TOPCRASH in mozilla crashreporter records for the past two weeks.
Comment 5 Martin Wegner 2015-07-28 11:51:33 UTC
Sorry for reporting back to this issue late, I was travelling. Anyhow, shall I still report this upstream or will this issue just have to wait for a fix for app-misc/tracker? Would it be possible to disable the thunderbird USE flag for tracker when >=thunderbird-38 is installed to temporarily solve this?
Comment 6 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-07-28 18:48:09 UTC
I couldn't find any bug report tracking this issue in upstream side... then, it would be nice if you could report it
Comment 7 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-11-14 17:02:37 UTC
We have 1.4.1 now, please try with that one
Comment 8 Clemente Aguiar 2015-11-28 20:16:09 UTC
I still get a segmentation fault.

Finally works with 1.8.0 here. I can also search for Thunderbird messages using the tracker-needle program. Thanks a lot.
