Thunderbird does not install my chosen locale (de) for the main application. Interestingly, it _does_ install the german locale for the calendar (lightning) and enigmail. What's more, it seems to use the user jvm, don't know if that is an issue: checking for java... /home/user/.gentoo/java-config-2/current-user-vm/bin/java checking for javac... /home/user/.gentoo/java-config-2/current-user-vm/bin/javac checking for javah... /home/user/.gentoo/java-config-2/current-user-vm/bin/javah checking for jar... /home/user/.gentoo/java-config-2/current-user-vm/bin/jar checking for jarsigner... /home/user/.gentoo/java-config-2/current-user-vm/bin/jarsigner checking for keytool... /home/user/.gentoo/java-config-2/current-user-vm/bin/keytool Build log will be attached. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge thunderbird 2. start thunderbird Actual Results: only English language available Expected Results: requested locale available In recent versions, one had to start thunderbird twice to get the desired locale. It would be nice if that bug could be fixed too as it doesn't happen on other systems, neither with firefox.

I can confirm this. The call to 'mozlinguas_src_install' has been accidentally removed from the >=thunderbird-38.0 ebuilds.
Workaround: In Thunderbird install addon from file. Select from distfiles folder: thunderbird-38.0.1-de.xpi
I confirm this but (italian here)
If we can get the mozilla overlay tested, I will push it to tree, it has been updated to -r1 to install the locale support that I drop'd on accident.
I install =mail-client/thunderbird-38.0.1-r1 from mozilla overlay. Now it supports my locale (ru).
German also works in thunderbird-38.0.1-r1 from the mozilla overlay.
-r1 is committed to tree, thanks for everyone's patients and reporting.
Sorry forgot to close
There are still a problem. In the time when my thunderbird spoke English, before you fixed the bug, it set "english" even as default language in options "compose". Now I try to set Italian, but it doesn't take the change saved. It reains English. I don't know if it is linked with this bug but it is very uncomfortable.
