Description Clemente Aguiar 2015-06-10 09:51:32 UTC
The PC freezes completely when I try to shutdown directly from Gnome interface.
This happens specifically after I do updates (emerge -uDN world).

I cannot figure out what is causing the problem, since a few seconds after I press the shutdown button the system freezes (still in the Gnome interface) and after I restart there is nothing in the logs.

But here are some interesting pointers.

1. The problem only happens if I try to shutdown directly from Gnome interface.

2. It does NOT freeze if I enter Gnome from the console (i.e. run "startx"), do my updates (emerge -uDN world), logout from Gnome and then shutdown from the console.

3. However it DOES freeze if I enter Gnome from the console (i.e. run "startx"), do my updates (emerge -uDN world), and from Gnome interface press shutdown button.

Help on how to trace this problem with be much appreciated.

Reproducible: Always

Does the problem happen if instead of startx, you start gnome from a login manager (e.g. gdm)?

Do you have portage-related processes still running after emerge finishes? (Check using "ps -aux" or pstree or similar)
Comment 2 Clemente Aguiar 2015-06-27 13:16:23 UTC
Here are the answers for the questions posed by Alexandre:

# Does the problem happen if instead of startx, you start gnome from a login manager (e.g. gdm)?

Yes, that how I used to login the machine, and when I noticed it starting happening.

# Do you have portage-related processes still running after emerge finishes? (Check using "ps -aux" or pstree or similar)

The emerge processes are definitely stopped.

Photo of call trace

I was able to take picture of call trace of one instance of a freeze.
Not sure if it helps.

Maybe kernel people will know about how to debug that traces :/
