Description Greisberger Christophe 2004-06-24 13:35:44 UTC
The emerge of alsa-driver works perfectly, but when I try to start alsasound,

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge alsa-driver
2. /etc/init.d/alsasound start
3.

Actual Results:

dmesg output

Basically the same as /var/log/messages
Comment 3 Greisberger Christophe 2004-06-24 13:44:18 UTC
Hem. Wrong title.

It worked with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.5 & gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.5-r1
It doesn't with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7 & gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r5

I had a similar problem when I switched from 2.4.x to 2.6.x but I fixed it by unmerging sys-apps/modutils
This time I have no clue why it doesn't work :-/

I am using sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2

I just checked again,
# ls -al /usr/src/linux
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 21 Jun 24 20:52 /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r5

When I emerge alsa-driver, it uses the right kernel tree, the modules are put at the right place.

# ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.7-gentoo-r5/kernel/sound/
total 18

Comment 5 Tuan Van (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-24 13:50:02 UTC
I wonder why you have to `emerge alsa-driver` since you are using kernel-2.6. You only need alsa-lib and alsa-util. Alsa drivers already in kernel-2.6.
Comment 6 Greisberger Christophe 2004-06-24 13:54:08 UTC
Well, because
  1. I never know which version of alsa is in the kernel
  2. the alsa-driver should work with 2.6.x kernels too ;-)

But I could effectively use the kernel ones.
I'll try to see if they are stable with my soundcard.
Comment 7 Greisberger Christophe 2004-06-24 14:00:30 UTC
Hehe. Stupid me, the alsa driver where compiled as module in the kernel.
I removed them and it works now.
