Description ShadowHawkBV 2004-06-22 18:45:09 UTC
Using Gnome 2.6 and selecting evolution from the menu gives: he Application "evolution-1.4" has quit unexpectedly. You can inform the developers of what happened to help them fix it. Or you can restart the application right now.
Selecting restart does nothing, selecting inform developers opens Bug-Buddy.

Executing evolution from the command line as a su gives:# evolution

(evolution:4865): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

(gnome_segv:4868): Gtk-WARNING **: Ignoring the separator setting

As a user: $ evolution

(gnome_segv:4872): Gtk-WARNING **: Ignoring the separator setting

Both bring up the same pop-up that the menu causes, and has the same effects.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge evolution
2.attempt to run evolution
3.

Actual Results:
See Details

Expected Results:
Evolution runs and picks up the evolution folder or activates the set-up tool.

Comment 2 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-23 04:23:40 UTC
yeah.. come back when you have rebuild your system with sane cflags.

checking your cflags i'd say you have basicly no clue what you are doing there, so I strongly suggest you to rebuild your system with a more basic set of flags (like the defaults), that will keep you out of trouble and us out of bugreports.
Comment 3 ShadowHawkBV 2004-06-23 14:14:38 UTC
Gee I must of missed the part where anything but evolution was harmed by the "insane" Cflags. But then since I "have basicly no clue what you are doing there" I must just be missing all the other errors. Thank you ever so much for pointing out that my entire systemn must be buggered because evolution after running on the same damn flags on reiser3 doesn't start up on ext3.

But thanks for the advice on what the problem may be.
Comment 4 ShadowHawkBV 2004-06-23 17:01:04 UTC
Using CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

Same error as the "insane" CFLAGS. But thanks for the dose of bile.
Comment 5 Joe McCann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-23 22:10:42 UTC
Don't reopen until you have compile every pacakge that evolution depends on in anyway with sane cflags(as told to do) Looking at your backtrace and response, Id say fosers comments were valid ones. If you are going to provide a backtrace, make sure it contains some actual debugging information.
Comment 6 ShadowHawkBV 2004-06-24 17:55:57 UTC
All 465 packages in my system were recompiled with the "safe" Cflags as mentioned previously.

My apologies. I assumed the backtrace from bugbuddy was a complete backtrace. When I get a chance, I'll track down the exact procedure for using gdb and try to get better backlogs then bug-buddy-2.6.0 provides.
Comment 7 Alastair Tse (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-27 06:11:54 UTC
if you want better backtraces you need to compile the relevant packages with -g in your CFLAGS and FEATURES="nostrip"

bugbuddy just uses gdb in the background anyway, so it makes no difference.

it looks like something wrong with your environment? especially your ~/.Xauthority file or your xfree
Comment 8 ShadowHawkBV 2004-06-27 08:36:37 UTC
Thanks for the information. I'm not sure what changed, but when I recompiled everything back to the starting CFLAGs (CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon-xp -msse -mmmx -m3dnow -momit-leaf-frame-pointer
-fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops -ftracer -ffast-math -fprefetch-loop-arrays
-finline-limit=600 -mfpmath=387 -pipe -freduce-all-givs"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu") It started up with the initial set-up windows. After logging out and then back in, the original set-up (and e-mai) was availiable.

For the next time this happens, I'll add the -g and the Features="nostrip" to the make.conf. I'm guessing that there was something wonky in my ~/.Xauthority as you mentioned.

Thanks for your patience and assistance.
