Description toni siukola 2004-06-22 12:48:11 UTC
I've just installed again 2004.1 (2.4.25 & server mode) with hand typed modprobe for 8139too & using online stages and it went ok. But problems start when starting 1st time gentoo linux without live cd. It doesn't start eth0 services.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install gentoo again with hand added support to netcard
2. boot
3. watch the error messages when is time to boot eth0 up

Actual Results:
Gentoo itself works, but without network

Expected Results:
Network should also works also after installation not only during installation

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=8

It appears that you missed the part about running:

rc-update add net.eth0 default

If you did do this step, and are having an error, please REOPEN this bug with the exact error message so we can investigate further.
Comment 2 toni siukola 2004-06-22 13:58:37 UTC
No it also done and I've checked it also rc-uppdate shown and net part looks like:

net.eth0 | default
net.lo | boot
netmount | default

so problem is somewhere else

It gives following problem in boot:

failed to bring eth0 up..
Error: Problem starting needed services. Netmount was not started.

Error is same that in bug with firewire, which can be solved during installation by typing modprobe for the netcard.

I also tryed to put 8139too to laud via autoload modules, but doesn't help

Do you get an error if you try to manually modprobe 8139too?
Comment 4 toni siukola 2004-06-22 14:09:09 UTC
Yes there comes numerous (~10) errors like

/lib/.../drivers/net8139too.o: Unresolved sumbol...

...kill_proc_R932da67e (for example)

also others like:

...pci_request_regions...
...iounmap...
...register_netdev...
...request_irq...

and so on

Did you compile this kernel yourself, or use genkernel? What kernel sources are you using? What version of the kernel?
Comment 6 toni siukola 2004-06-22 14:23:54 UTC
I compile kernel by myself from gs-sources with 2.4.25_pre7-gss-r6 version.
Comment 7 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-07-20 19:14:59 UTC
Did you not include /proc filesystem support?
