Is it because of http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube-2-4 "This release is about porting Minitube to the new YouTube APIs, version 3. The old ones are going to be switched off in a few weeks so everybody make sure to update." The bump is not trivial, since it requires some thinking about the Google API Key thing. I will probably do nothing and ask the user to export the variable himself.
I don't think it is related to the API change. I can still play videos without problem with minitube-2.3-r1 (installed last year in November). But my use flags differ from the bug reporter's. I have "download" and "gstreamer" active. And I vaguely remember that at some point I had to install gstreamer because minitube wasn't playing anything anymore (could have been the update from 2.2 to 2.3). Before that I had kept my system clean of gstreamer as none of the video or audio players I used needed the overhead of gstreamer to do their job.
It's possible to be related to gstreamer but according to upstream "old releases" are going to stop working "soon" so lets prepare for that.
So I need to perform an update?

And libpostproc has hard dependency on libav. And due to your flags vlc wants to use ffmpeg. You have a few ways to fix this: 1. set use-flag 'libav' to force vlc use libav too. 2. force mpv to use ffmpeg instead of libpostproc. you'd have to modify ffmpeg flags and probably unmerge postproc too and/or restrict libpostproc merging. 3. disable postproc flag for mpv 4. use mpv of higher version, it uses libav flag too and problem should disappear. I guess mpv-0.3.10 ebuild has to be fixed to use libav flag too. Or mpv-0.3.11-r1 or later has to be used: it already has 'libav' flag.
updated world and now minitube will not even load. So I manually installed the mpv-0.3.11-r1 ebuild and still minitube will not load. I going to run a backtrace and post it.

i the 2.4 ebuild in the portage tree how do I install using that?

So I think I will modify the ebuild a little bit to ask the user to generate one himself and export it to his environment.
I am closing this bug since it seems a user error in the phonon configuration. If you need support please head over to the forums or mailing list I have also unmasked 2.4 for you to try it but as discussed you need to generate an API key before you can merge the package.
