emerge xmms-1.2.10-r5 result in :

configure.in:13: version mismatch.  This is Automake 1.7.9,
configure.in:13: but the definition used by this AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
configure.in:13: comes from Automake 1.7.8.  You should recreate
configure.in:13: aclocal.m4 with aclocal and run automake again.

Please give more of the output.  The problem is not shown here...  It would be before any of the ./configure information.
