from an email we received on the www@g.o alias: "The openoffice herd is defined in herds.xml by the Gentoo Metastructure Project: which is pointing to non-existing page: https://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/metastructure" ... the devmanual should link to the correct authority/page for herds.xml content, as the metastructure project doesn't seem to exist anymore. Reproducible: Always
I can't find herds.xml in the new website. is there such a thing?
(In reply to Markos Chandras from comment #1) > I can't find herds.xml in the new website. is there such a thing? Last thing I heard about herds is them being deprecated. As such, no herds on g.o right now. Is that not yet/no longer the case?
I have looked at the ML archives a few weeks ago and the whole "lets kill herds" topic is stale. So I think that herds are still relevant. Thread: https://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-dev/message/526a5be120b3a14096ede7eef8431fde Council discussed a few bits: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.devel/93587 (sorry can't find a while to view the original discussion @archives.gentoo.org as a thread) but no progress since then (I think)
Yes, the idea got stuck on developers refusing any change that could increase the number of bytes in XML. We can either work on bringing the files back for the sake of it, or use the pretext to kill them.
The Metastructure project page is now here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Metastructure CCing their members (as there seems to be no e-mail address for the project).
Hey come on, please don't mix up the two topics again. 1) do we need the concept of herds? (or are f.ex. projects and subprojects perfectly sufficient) 2) how should maintainers be specified in the metadata? (xml, yaml, <property type="maintainer" status="definitive,dedicated">kde</property>, <herd>kde</herd>, ...) Topic 2) is offtopic here. I am personally all for getting rid of herds as an idea, and replace them fully with projects and subprojects and their e-mail aliases. (Does anyone really use the word "herd" in the proper sense, i.e. groups of packages?)
(In reply to Andreas K. Hüttel from comment #6) I feel like neither discussion is to be held on this bug. What I would need to know from metastructure is: Do we need a hosted copy of herds.xml—be it just for the time being or permanently?

In my opinion: yes but hopefully only for a transition time (since the plan to migrate away from it has not been finalized yet)

(In reply to Andreas K. Hüttel from comment #8) Okay: https://api.gentoo.org/packages/herds.xml Editing via the usual api git; CVS is deprecated. Website contains human-readable info on https://www.gentoo.org/inside-gentoo/developers/herds.html One thing this setup can not provide is the functionality of <maintainingproject>.
Herds are deprecated per GLEP 67 and devmanual is updated to reflect that: https://gitweb.gentoo.org/proj/devmanual.git/commit/?id=ce5c5b320b1d69080c1ee9591c984ad1f28ee49c Not sure if https://www.gentoo.org/inside-gentoo/developers/herds.html is necessary now.
Probably www team will like to remember that the link is probably obsolete and think if they can remove it completely or redirect to other place (but, if I don't misremember, there is currently no list with all the projects + members right? I think people will need to check each project page or developer page to know about the members of each project :/)
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #12) > if I don't misremember, there is currently no list with all the projects + > members right? I think people will need to check each project page or > developer page to know about the members of each project :/) The wiki project page does list the members: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Gentoo If that doesn't work there's always: https://api.gentoo.org/metastructure/projects.xml
Well https://api.gentoo.org/metastructure/projects.xml is more useful because it lists in one page the members while wiki page lists only the leads... but the formatting is, indeed, a bit hard to read ;) Thanks for the link :)
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #12) > Probably www team will like to remember that the link is probably obsolete > and think if they can remove it completely or redirect to other place […] What link? I've added members to the wiki listing; even though that page now needs some information redesign more than ever, it should do what you want.

Ah, thanks a lot, it's really useful :D

It directs people and includes an explanation why. Note it is not linked to from the navigation.
(In reply to Alex Legler from comment #17) [...] > Note it is not linked to from the navigation. I missed that sorry :S
Devmanual does not contain the mentioned reference anymore and looks like proper redirects are in place. Resolving the bug. Feel free to reopen if you disagree.
