There are file collisions when you try to emerge amdapp from the science overlay with ati-drivers installed. * Detected file collision(s): * * /usr/lib64/OpenCL/vendors/amd/libOpenCL.so.1 * /usr/lib64/OpenCL/vendors/amd/libOpenCL.so Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge ati-drivers 2. emerge amdapp Actual Results: amdapp is not installed due to file collisions. I can confirm that amdapp-2.9.1 provides libOpenCl.so* marbre@thornydevil /var/tmp/portage/dev-util/amdapp-2.9.1/work/lib/x86_64 $ ls -la [..] lrwxrwxrwx 1 marbre marbre 14 Aug 22 2014 libOpenCL.so -> libOpenCL.so.1 -rw-r--r-- 1 marbre marbre 27352 Aug 19 2014 libOpenCL.so.1 This also applies for amdapp-2.9.

So is this the same lib as ati-drivers provide? Which package is the better provider?
As discussed in the #gentoo-science IRC the libOpenCL.so is just a ICD wrapper with no implementation. The library /usr/lib64/OpenCL/vendors/amd/libamdocl64.so provides the implementation. As libOpenCL.so might not be different between both packages, the libamdocl64 differs in file size: /var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers-14.12-r3/work/arch/x86_64/usr/lib64 $ ls -la libamdocl64.so -h [..] 60M Nov 28 21:02 libamdocl64.so /var/tmp/portage/dev-util/amdapp-2.9.1/work/lib/x86_64 $ ls -la libamdocl64.so -h [..] 38M Aug 19 2014 libamdocl64.so
Okay, I finally digged into a little deeper... The amdapp ebuild installs the libOpenCL.so* to /opt/AMDAPP/lib/{x86,x86_64}. The files at /usr/lib64/OpenCL/vendors/amd/ are only symlinks which we could skip. Looks like these are the only file collisions. Regarding my previous comment, these libs are same size and version now in the amdapp 3.0 beta package.
To solve bug #567240, I checked the install script 'install.sh' shipped with amdapp-3.0. They provide a function 'handleCatalyst()', which removes libOpenCL.so* prior to the installation if catalyst is installed. Thus catalyst is the preferred provider.
